I Wonder When She Stopped Being Loud
I was in a meeting recently, deep in a discussion, when I stepped out for a break and ran into an old college friend.
In college, she was the one everyone remembered. Loud opinions in class, first to argue, first to organize the protest, first to laugh the hardest at her own jokes. You couldn't miss her in a room.
This time I almost did.
She was standing quietly near the door, nodding along to whatever conversation was happening near her, agreeing before anyone even finished their sentence. Someone introduced her as "so nice, so adjusting," and she just smiled like she'd heard it a hundred times before.
I caught myself thinking, what happened to her. But that's not really fair, is it. People change, and change isn't always loss. Maybe she's calmer now, not smaller. Maybe what looks like quiet to me is actually peace to her. I don't know her years in between, the things she chose, the things life chose for her.
What stayed with me wasn't really about her. It was the word everyone used so easily, "adjusting." We say it like it's a compliment, but we rarely ask what a person adjusted away from, or whether they had a say in it at all. That's less about one friend and more about all of us, how easily we praise women for shrinking and call it grace.
So maybe I wasn't judging her. Maybe I was just noticing the pattern she got folded into.
Life changes people, that's fair. I just hope whatever she became, she chose it herself.
